Feldspar

Feldspar

Feldspar belongs to the group of Tectosilicates or framework silicates and is found in abundance in earth’s crust making a total of 60% of terrestrial rocks. Basically, there are two types of Feldspar, namely Sodium Feldspar and Potassium Feldspar. However, some of the deposits offer mixed Feldspar also. In Sodium Feldspar, the content of soda (Na2O) is found in the range of 6% to 11% and in Potassium Feldspar, Potash content (K2O) is generally available in the range of 6% to 12%. The percentage content of soda and potash can vary from one deposit to another.

Feldspars crystallize from magma in igneous rocks as veins and they can also be found in several kinds of metamorphic rock. Rocks that are formed with 100% contents of calcic plagioclase are most commonly known as anorthosite. Chemically, feldspars are silicates of aluminum which are enriched with the contents of sodium, potassium, iron, calcium or even barium. The ratio of content depends primarily on the area of deposits and mines.

Usage And Applications:

According the usage, Feldspar is a part of our daily life. Some of the most common applications of this mineral in a household are glass, fiberglass for insulation, floor tiles, shower basins, tableware etc. Hence, it is used in industries like tiles, glass, table ware, ceramics, sanitary ware and insulators.

Feldspars have a significant role as fluxing agents in ceramics and glass applications. Besides, properties like great dispersability, high resistance to scratch, low stickiness at high filler loading, good refractive index, resistance to frosting, chemical inertness and stable pH balance make it a perfect choice to be used as fillers in paint, rubber and adhesive industry.
